Watching local, national, or worldwide news we can become all too aware that we live in a dangerous world. It’s also easy to worry about our safety in this all too threatening world. What’s going to happen – to me, to mine?
Worry is the antithesis of faith. As Christ-followers we know we’re supposed to trust but how is that supposed to work? How are we supposed to hold onto Christ? Where do we go to be safe?
I recently found a local company that is the best example of faith in action that I could find. On the first page of their website they make this statement,
“You and your family deserve to be safe when tragedy strikes.”
When sickness hits, storms rage, relationships go bad, or difficult circumstances of life push us in scary directions, it’s easy to feel threatened, discouraged, and even fearful.
The company’s name is Safe Haven Storm Shelters. They have a solid steel room which bolts into your home and gives you a place to run in case of any natural disaster or man-made threat. You stay secure in safety for as long as you need to stay.
Safe Haven Storm Shelters is the perfect example of …..
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18:2
But as for me, I shall sing of Your strength; Yes, I shall joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the morning, For You have been my stronghold And a refuge in the day of my distress. Psalm 59:16
When reading through the Old Testaments we can miss the wonderful meanings of ancient words that, on first look, don’t relate to our 21st Century lives. On closer look words like “fortress,” “refuge” and “stronghold” hold huge blessings if we can understand what every member of the population of the “before-Christ” world would know from observation.
In the days of walled cities when a community came under attack and began to be overwhelmed, all you had to do was run into the central stronghold – literally the “Safe Haven Storm Shelter” of that day. When our lives are under attack – physical, emotional, or spiritual the only action we are required to take is run to Jesus – our stronghold and refuge.
We don’t hang onto Him, He hangs onto us. We don’t protect ourselves, He surrounds us in His all powerful, ever present arms. He is the steel walls and locked door protecting us from harm. Trials happen. We all suffer hard times. But Christians run to Jesus who takes us under His powerful wings and keeps us safe in His love.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!” For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper And from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark. You will not be afraid of the terror by night, Or of the arrow that flies by day; Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, Or of the destruction that lays waste at noon. Psalm 91:1–6
Is Jesus Christ’s arms the place you run when times get tough? He is the only place we are all truly safe.
The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. 2 Timothy 4:18
Think about it…
