What’s So New About It?

2018!  It’s all over the place.  You see it in stores, you see it in holiday emails and social media, and it’s on the lips of complete strangers.  “Happy New Year!”  But I’ve been thinking… many people face this coming year with the thought, “what’s so new about it?  I’m going to face the same overwhelming bills, looking at the same bad news on the scale, and not seeing anything new in the circumstances of my life.”  This might even be what you’re thinking.

But, I’ve got good news.  God is in THE MAKING THINGS NEW BUSINESS.  He specializes in the miracle of newness.  The Bible is full of examples where God makes things completely new.

He doesn’t refurbish things and make the same old things look a little different.  He makes them completely, totally, NEW!

Christ followers should never lose the perspective that God wants everything in our lives to be NEW!  2 Corinthians 5:17 says He makes us NEW people, Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”   This verse clearly points out that the Lord makes US NEW but, He also makes the THINGS in our lives NEW.  Our circumstances may not physically change, but our attitudes toward them and God’s will over them does.

We have a Happy New Life!

He gives us NEW attitudes of joy and praise, “He put a NEW SONG in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the Lord.” Psalm 40:3

Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain NEW STRENGTH; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.  Isaiah 40:31

Behold, the former things have come to pass, Now I declare NEW THINGS; Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.” Isaiah 42:9

This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are NEW EVERY MORNING; Great is Your faithfulness.  Lamentations 3:21–23

They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”  Mark 1:27

And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the NEW COVENANT in My blood. Luke 22:20

that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the OLD SELF, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the NEW SELF, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. Ephesians 4:22–24

So, as this NEW YEAR begins, I pray you bring to mind again and again that we are constantly trying to refurbish our lives… making over our weight, our relationships, or our circumstances.  BUT God is not in the refurbishing business.  As He clearly proclaims from His throne in Revelation 21:5And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I AM MAKING ALL THINGS NEW.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”

Think about it… and Happy New Year!
