To Infinity & Beyond

Ah yes!  The cartoon character, Buzz Lightyear – a wonderful source of spiritual perspective.  But if we think about his famous exclamation of “To Infinity and Beyond,” we can come to a revealing contemplation of The Lord God Himself.

We should ask, “Just exactly how far is beyond infinity?”  No human perspective can answer.  But, God knows exactly what “beyond infinity” means and not only does He know how far infinity is – He is Himself “beyond infinity.”

After some computer problems, I’d like to look at the very last meditation in the Navigator’s tool “30 Days of Praying the Names and Attributes of God.”  It is my hope that this series of blogs have been a fantastic tool not just for meditation but also in leading you into a refreshed prayer life.

Now, “To infinity and beyond!”    quoting from the Navigator tool:

God is infinite.

God is beyond measurement—we cannot define Him by size or amount. He has no beginning, no end, and no limits.

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!         Romans 11:33

How do we comprehend or explain infinity?  If you could explain it, measure it, or even imagine it, it wouldn’t be infinite.  As human beings we live within the confines of space and time.  We are finite beings with a perspective limited by our mental capacities to grasp such abstract, impossibly huge concepts.

God exists and functions beyond time, beyond space, beyond comprehension, and beyond imagination.  We cannot go “beyond” infinity… as much as we’d like to.  Only God resides there in the “beyond.”  Even our eternal life is not infinite… it has a beginning when we acknowledge Christ as Lord and Savior and it will last from that moment on into forever… but it had a start so it is not infinite.

A.W. Tozer wrote in his book, The attributes of God: A journey into the Father’s heart (volume 1, page 4),

God is infinite! That’s the hardest thought I will ask you to grasp. You cannot understand what infinite means, but don’t let it bother you—I don’t understand it and I’m trying to explain it! “Infinite” means so much that nobody can grasp it, but reason nevertheless kneels and acknowledges that God is infinite. We mean by infinite that God knows no limits, no bounds and no end. What God is, He is without boundaries. All that God is, He is without bounds or limits.

When God looks at space and time He sees it all.  All history is to Him just a glance.  The universe is held in the palm of His hand.  He is beyond it all and He understands it all… that’s what makes Him God.  He sees your history – the past, the present, and all your future.  He holds you in that same palm.  It is mind boggling to comprehend that, although the Lord is beyond our infinity, He knows you specifically.  He knows your name.  He knows your inner thoughts.  Yet (and here’s the good news) He absolutely loves you… with a love that goes to “Infinity and Beyond!”

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.         Psalm 103:11–12

Think about it…

  • Surely in the eternal order our life will be joined with Jesus Christ in limitless or endless in space, it is impossible to measure or calculate: the infinite mercy of God as are the infinite number of stars in the universe.

    • Mathematics (of a series) able to be continued indefinitely.

that’s exactly why sharing Christ with those who don’t know Him is so very important. They will not enjoy the infinite God unless they come through His Son. Thanks for sharing, Sheila.

When I tried, vainly, to explain how God might see our time from His eternal perspective, my High School Sunday School students could not be persuaded that perhaps while our “time” is like a line or string for us, it’s more like a pool in a small bowl for God. He sees all and knows all, all at the same time. His “time” is infinitely larger than we can conceive. I’m looking forward to “Infinity and Beyond!”
