I’m going to try something I’ve never done in my “I’ve Been Thinking” blog. I’m going to write a blog every day for the next 30 days. Recently I came across a great prayer tool called “30 Days of Praying the Names and Attributes of God.” It’s a prayer tool put out by the Navigators (click here to go to website).
I’ve been thinking about God and thought I would challenge myself with the plan to comment on each day’s subject.
Follow along as we go through the next 30 days of considering God and perhaps being asked to think about Him in some new ways. Then, as we pray throughout the day to dwell on what this thinking means to the way we pray.
quoting from the Navigator tool:
God is omnipotent.
This means God is all-powerful. He spoke all things into being, and all things – every cell, every breath, every thought – are sustained by Him. There is nothing too difficult for Him to do.
“Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You, who shows lovingkindness to thousands, but repays the iniquity of fathers into the bosom of their children after them, O great and mighty God. The Lord of hosts is His name” Jeremiah 32:17–18
Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is anything too difficult for Me?” Jeremiah 32:26–27
Whenever I think about Almighty God I like to use the idea that He is Omni-Potent. Omni meaning “all inclusive” and Potent meaning “strong acting – powerful.” When we go before God in prayer we are praying to a being who is totally and completely limitless and powerful. In other words He is able to act outside of any constraint whatsoever.
Looking at them, Jesus said, “With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.” Mark 10:27
“For nothing will be impossible with God.” Luke 1:37
There is a danger for us when we begin to pray to a totally “Omni-Potent” God. Instead of giving Him glory and reverence for the fact of who and what He is… that this characteristic alone, makes Him the God to be worshiped with praise and honor… we have a tendency to treat Him like a giant Santa Claus.
We tend to pray something like, “Since you can do anything, how about giving me wealth and health or getting me out of this mess I’m in? That would be a miracle I could thank you for. Amen.”
Perhaps it would please the God of the Universe for us to just humbly come before Him in awe and wonder, that the God who can do anything chose to think about you – send His Son to die for you – come into your heart when you acknowledge that Son – and establish a close, personal, and eternal relationship with you.
Wow. How humbling… and yet how awesome.
Father, You are amazing. The universe is in Your hand. You can do anything. Yet, You chose to love me. You chose to bless me with Your indwelling presence. You chose to show me Your love. I fall down and worship You. You are not only totally powerful, You are totally worthy and deserving of my humble attempts to worship You and sing Your praise. You can do anything, Lord so do anything You desire in my life. I’m all Yours.
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 1 Peter 5:6
Think about it…
