Do You Know Old Faithful?

yellowstone-381305_1920Most everyone is familiar with the Old Faithful geyser of Yellowstone National Park.  Discovered in 1870 by the Washburn Expedition, it was named for its frequent eruptions – which number more than a million since Yellowstone became the world’s first national park in 1872.  Old Faithful erupts about every 60 to 110 minutes depending on the duration of the last eruption.  When erupting, it shoots scalding, hot water up to 140 feet into the air.  Every year hundreds of thousands of people flock to the park and the geyser’s location just to watch its regular and spectacular show of power.  When they come, they trust that within 60 to 110 minutes viewing the eruption will make their trip worthwhile.

Yet, when we come to God in prayer, we can be assured that He is more trustworthy and faithful than anything in His creation.  Stop for a second and think about this – do you really believe that God is a perfectly faithful God?

When Christ-followers surrender their lives’ control to Jesus and He becomes Lord over all life’s aspects, can He be trusted?  Will He take care of us?  Will He guide us out of troubles into peace, joy, and blessings?  Will He comfort us in our times of need? Will He give us a heavenly eternity as He’s promised?

Let’s see what thoughts the Navigator’s tool “30 Days of Praying the Names and Attributes of God” has for our prayerful consideration.

quoting from the Navigator tool:

God is faithful.

Out of His faithfulness God honors His covenants and fulfills His promises. Our hope for the future rests upon God’s faithfulness.

I will sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever; To all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth. For I have said, “Lovingkindness will be built up forever; In the heavens You will establish Your faithfulness.” “I have made a covenant with My chosen; I have sworn to David My servant, I will establish your seed forever And build up your throne to all generations.”   The heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones. For who in the skies is comparable to the Lord? Who among the sons of the mighty is like the Lord, A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, And awesome above all those who are around Him? O Lord God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.         Psalm 89:1–8

We note that no less than four times in those verses the assurance that God is a faithful God is mentioned.  We can trust Him.  He is more powerful than the Old Faithful geyser.  He is more consistent in His love, mercy, and grace toward us than the schedule of that steaming fountain.  He is absolutely, positively, dependable to each of His children… those that surrender to His will, His timing, and His love.

God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.       1 Corinthians 1:9

No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.       1 Corinthians 10:13

But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.       2 Thessalonians 3:3

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful;       Hebrews 10:23

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.       1 John 1:9

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.       1 Thessalonians 5:23–24

That beats some old cloud of steam – any day!

Think about it.
